If you’ve gone to the supermarket lately, odds are you might have noticed an increase of cherries on the shelves. That’s because cherry season is here!

Did you know? Even though there are 1,000 varieties of cherries, you’ll only see 20 different varieties sold to consumers in stores.

Cherries can be used on top of ice cream, in pies, or by themselves as a snack. United Supermarkets corporate dietitian Brenda Garcia says they’re great for you because not only do they have fiber and potassium, but tart cherries and tart cherry juice also have tryptophan, an a-amino acid that’s essential to humans. Cherries also contain melatonin, so if you’re having trouble sleeping, they could also help with that.

You can read more about cherries and their nutritional value, as well as some fun facts about them by visiting the Happy + Nourished blog by United Supermarkets.

Cherries can be prepared in a variety of ways, which is why Happy + Nourished has multiple recipes on their site — and they all sound delicious! Whether you want pickled cherries, chocolate-covered cherries, or stuffed cherry and rosemary tenderloin, you can find a recipe to make on the Happy + Nourished website.
