United Supermarket’s Fun Family Dinner Idea: Breakfast for Dinner
United Supermarkets' Corporate Dietician Brenda Garcia remembers her kids always thinking breakfast for dinner was a huge treat while they were growing up.
Of course, so did Mom, because it's often pretty quick and easy to throw together a healthy, hearty breakfast: eggs and frozen wholegrain waffles. Or do a breakfast version of avocado toast by putting mashed avocado, tomato, and cheese on hashbrowns.
One challenge might be getting enough protein in "breakfast" if you're not making eggs. Garcia suggests grabbing a handful of almonds, adding peanut butter powder or almond butter powder to oatmeal or cereal, or incorporating some Greek yogurt. You always could add chicken or beef to a savory breakfast dish too.
Overall, family meal nights are associated with increased fruit and vegetable in-take, as well as better mental and physical health, according to Happy + Nourished, a blog by Garcia's team.
"Having family meals at least three times per week can reduce the likelihood of children using drugs, smoking, and drinking alcohol," the blog states. "Children are also likely to have better test scores and are likely to do better in school when they share multiple meals with their family."
