Lubbock loves restaurants, but usually for a short time. It can be only the littlest of things that can take a place from packed to desolate in nothing flat.

I was motoring around the Loop yesterday at around 5:00. Yes, it was a Sunday, but you'd still think that the newer restaurants would show some signs of life. I saw a new restaurant I was meaning to try and thought, "oh, that's where that is".

The problem with my restaurant sighting was that my next thought was, why is that place empty at dinner time on the weekend?  This is the type of thing that causes concern for some of us, and we immediately start thinking somethings wrong with the place even if it isn't.

Is Your Favorite Lubbock Restaurant Closing? Key Warning Signs

Probably the most telling sign a restaurant will be going out of soon is, a bad food inspection report. It's true that man restaurants bounce back, but letting the place go to heck can be a pretty strong indicator that they aren't investing the time or effort into the place anymore (or not hiring the people to do it for them).

I'll also say that a lack of advertising and active socials is a sign a place is on the way out. This town very much follows a vibe, and if people aren't talking about a place, then it's just not going to happen. It kills me to see places not at least put pictures of their food or list specials on their social media.

Next on the list is what we can call "online chatter". Yes, most people only post negative stuff online, but if you start seeing reoccuring themes about the quality of the food or the service, it's a pretty good sign that the people who run the place have checked out.

Lastly, you should always be concerned about your favorite restaurant if there are too many restaurants in that category. Sure, the new things won't always beat them, but they could take away enough cash to cause problems. At this point I think it would be safer to go to Vegas than to open a Mexican restaurant in Lubbock. Even if it's great, there's just a ton of them to support.
