Lubbock Area Swamped With Recent Rain, But Drought Continues
After a hot and dry summer, the last week or so has seen a big change for communities on the South Plains. Cooler temperatures and more importantly, rain fell across the area in numbers we haven't seen in a while.
So much rain fell in Lubbock that we saw several different flash flood warnings. According to KAMC, at the official site for Lubbock, the city recorded 2.68 inches of rain between Saturday and Thursday. Some areas of Lubbock did get more while others may have seen lower totals.
Communities around Lubbock also saw very good rain totals. According to KAMC, Wolfforth saw 3.32 inches of rain while Floydada received over 2 inches of rain on Wednesday alone.
While the rain is welcomed by most, it doesn't mean the drought is over by any means as KAMC reports.
While Lubbock and the South Plains are still experiencing drought, the rainfall in August improved conditions.
According to NWS, rainfall in the last 30 days was 125% to 200% above normal.
At the end of July, all of Lubbock County was in extreme drought, NWS said.
As of Thursday, the northwest half of the county is in severe drought conditions, an improvement since July, with the southeastern half still in extreme drought.
Don't count on the rainy conditions to last much longer. Forecasts show a chance of rain next week but nothing compared to what we have experienced lately.
