We were all well aware of the Tyler Shough news on Saturday as the starting quarterback left the game for the Red Raiders after throwing a pick-six to the Longhorns. Shough's injury was confirmed as a broken collar bone by Matt Wells who said the injury could keep him out for at least six weeks.

Shough wasn't the only captain to get injured on Saturday in the 70-35 loss though. Defensive captain and fifth-year senior safety Marquis Waters also left the game with an upper-body injury.

Matt Wells revealed today that he would miss the rest of the season after suffering a pectoral injury which will require him to have surgery. Waters is in his first season at Texas Tech after playing four seasons at Duke. In the first four games of 2021 for the Red Raiders Waters totaled nine tackles and one tackle-for-loss, and he returned an interception for a touchdown against Florida International.

The Red Raiders are fairly deep in the secondary and Waters replacement, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, played well on Saturday as one of the rare bright spots on the Texas Tech defense. Taylor-Demerson had the only stop of the Texas offense all night with an interception of Casey Thompson in the endzone. Wells also named Adrian Frye as a player who could play more safety moving forward.

Frye has played multiple positions in the Texas Tech secondary during his time as a Red Raider.

Waters could potentially return for a sixth season next year after receiving an extra year of eligibility for COVID, Waters still has an available redshirt that could be used because of the new rule of allowing players to play in up to four games without burning a redshirt.

18 Guys Who Could Coach Texas Tech Football in 2022

This list is by no means complete, it's just some names I've seen circulating on social media and message boards. Along with the usual suspects, I've added some wild cards to make it a little spicier. Matt Wells is still my leading candidate to be coaching in 2022, but if he isn't I'd be satisfied with most of the coaches on this list taking over.

The following list is in no particular order, and no favoritism or bias was shown in the making of this article.
