Texas Tech Rushes the Field After Beating 22nd Ranked Longhorns

The Texas Tech special teams have not been good this season. They missed field goals in both of their first two home games before Trey Wolff drilled a field goal to send the Houston game to overtime. Since that kick, he's hit two more. Maybe the two biggest kicks of his career so far.

The first came with 25 seconds left in regulation to take a 34-31 over the rival Texas Longhorns. The second came in overtime to ice the game 37-34 over the 22nd-ranked Longhorns in what could be the final time these two teams ever play.

The 2022 win over the Longhorns in Lubbock is the Red Raiders' first win at home over the team from Austin since 2008 and only the second since 2002. That's three wins in Lubbock in the last 10 tries.

Since the Longhorns seem to be balking at the thought of continuing the series with the Red Raiders, the rivalry trophy for this game will remain in Lubbock for the indefinite future. A permanent feature should be built to show off the Chancellor's Spurs at some prominent location so Texas Tech can remember this moment.

The Longhorns are still scheduled to be in the Big 12 next year, so Texas Tech might play a final time in Austin, but that's not a guarantee with the conference realignment drama we've seen over the last two years. It might be that OU and UT are in their final season in the conference.

If that's the case, those Spurs will be collecting dust in Lubbock for quite a while.
